Styling is one of the few industries where there are more jobs for competent, versatile stylists than there are stylists to fill them.

There is an insatiable demand for professional freelance styling. 99% of advertising agencies, fashion and lifestyle publications, TV shows, business and corporate identities and celebrities rely heavily on freelance stylists.

This course also gives you the opportunity to be your own boss and to choose the styling work that most suits you. As a freelance stylist, you can also start small and build your reputation and income job by job. You can also work from home and to a large degree you can choose your own clients and the nature of the work you accept. This does not demand a university degree or other academic qualifications.

Course content

Module 1- Introduction to Styling

This introduction sets a solid foundation to the exciting and dynamic world of styling. You will be introduced to what it means to style in different environments and for different clients, and be introduced to the wide range of opportunities for stylists. You will be presented with the evolution of fashion to help you understand where it’s progressing, as well as a handy glossary of terms to prepare you for the rest of this course and concludes with assignment one.

Module 2- Elements of Style & Trends

This module explores essential knowledge of fashion, to help you understand modern trends. It explores the relationships between visual balance, colour and fashion, as well as assessing styles and trends. This module also offers a glossary of clothing descriptions, and concludes with assignment two.

Module 3- Personal Styling & Grooming

Personal styling is a challenging and dynamic role which you as a stylist can explore. In this module you will learn the basics of what it means to be a ‘personal stylist’ or ‘image consultant’. This module also offers practical advice on how to deal with clients, understanding their needs and their body, individual features, developing a core wardrobe, working with accessories and looking rich on a budget. This module concludes with assignment three.

Module 4- Colour

This module explores the power of colour. By an in depth exploration of colour, you will understand colour theory and psychology, how to assess your clients natural colouring, how to develop colour palettes etc.This module also explores fabrics, how to work with different fabrics and care techniques. This module concluded with assignment four.

Module 5- Body Analysis

Understanding your client’s body shape and how to dress it is the first step in helping them to create a working, successful wardrobe that will make them look fantastic. Even with a wardrobe filled with the most expensive clothes in all of the right colours for their complexion, your client will still not look polished and sophisticated if the garments are all the incorrect shape for your client’s body type. This module will explore this in depth and conclude with assignment five.

Module 6- Male Styling

This module delivers professional information you must possess when working with male clients. You will be presented with practical advice on how to teach your client to dress for their body type, how to find the clothes that are most flattering for them, and how to avoid the most common body-type faux pas men make.

Module 7- Business for stylist

To make sure you excel as a stylist, this module is a practical guide on building your styling business. It explores marketing, retaining and creating clients, getting booked, managing your portfolio, business aspects such as invoicing, pricing and keeping records. To conclude, this tutorial offers a course summary, and concludes with assignment six.

Module 8- Portfolio Presentation

All this knowledge will be rendered almost useless without the ability to effectively express your style ideas. This module covers creating mood and concept boards and adapting traditional designer’s tools for visual communication, to effectively communicate to your clients. You will be guided on using and building on experience to build confidence and your portfolio.

Meet The Mentor

Daphne Gomes – After graduating with a degree in Fashion Design and Manufacturing from the prestigious Sophia College, Daphne went on to pursue a career as a fashion designer where she spent the initial years getting first hand experience in production by working as a merchandiser in Asia’s largest production factory. Then she ventured into the big world of fashion business, setting up her own workshop with tailoring and intricate hand embroidery artisans to create bespoke fashion garments for clients from across the world. Daphne was a lecturer in fashion design and manufacturing at three prestigious institutes in India and UAE where she was imparting her knowledge to students from all nationalities while simultaneously creating bespoke fashion garments. Daphne has also successfully led the team on the region’s biggest wedding and lifestyle event in the UAE for several years hosting international designers and wedding suppliers. To widen her knowledge she completed a course in styling – Professional Photo, Film, TV & Personal Stylist from the British College of Professional Styling while she lived in London the past few years. Having spent over 25 years living in Dubai and London, gave her wider exposure in the international fashion and Lifestyle industry.
